Walking the Gobi, with National Geographic Explorer Helen Thayer

THURS, MAY 9, 7pm

With a delicious assortment of DINNER and DESSERT catered by SUNFLOWER CATERING

Methow Arts and the Twisp Library Friends are proud to host National Geographic Explorer and bestselling author, Helen Thayer.

In the scope and significance of accomplishments achieved by women, Helen Thayer stands alone. She travels without guides or support teams. At times she has overcome incredible obstacles to reach her goals through dedicated planning and problem solving. In a career that spans the planet north to south and east to west, her diversity and experience are without compare. Named one of the Great Explorers of the Twentieth Century by National Geographic and honored in a ceremony at the White House, Helen is truly “one-of-a-kind.”

Although it’s only the fifth largest in the world, the Gobi Desert is the most expansive arid region on the Asian continent. The desert spans two countries, covering parts of northern and northwestern China and up into southern Mongolia. A rain shadow desert, Gobi suffers from having most of its rain blocked by the Himalyas. However, this doesn’t mean the region receives zero precipitation. In fact, the Gobi gets about 7 inches of rainfall each year.

A “meet the author” reception will follow with book signing and Q & A. A variety of DINNER and DESSERT options will be available throughout from Sunflower Catering. Beer and Wine also available for purchase.

DINNER MENU by Sunflower Catering (may change slightly): a variety of savory dinner items such as Italian sausage (from Thomson’s) and pepper empanada’s, soba noodle bowls (chicken and veggie), hummus bowls (with grilled pita and vegetables), caramel apple bundt cake, strawberry and cream crepes, marbled brownies with raspberry coulis and coconut macaroons.

Helen Thayer is also presenting in our local school as part of the Methow Arts Alliance Arts Education Program. Methow Arts bring vital ART experiences to over 5700 students in Okanogan County through seven school districts.
