Painting The Grain at Confluence Gallery

October 14-November 18, 2023

ARTIST:
Kalindi Kunis

The nucleus of the Painting the Grain series is from years of painting over stunning wood grain panels and finally one day, a ‘blank’ panel showed up in a panel order, and it sent me whirling into memories of a photo of my mother, with me in her belly, which became a piece called Mother of the Mountain. Since I started using wood panels for my acrylic work, I struggled to gesso over the beautiful grain patterns, I finally let myself follow with lines of grain to lead me where the landscape or imagery wants to be. It feels to me as if the wood and its natural grain is telling a story of the kind of place it might have grown, and in that way this work is a very personal homage to our environment, which is so desperate for our care & stewardship.
