Kidz Summer Art & Nature Camps at North Cascades Basecamp

August 5-7, 12-14, 19-21, 2014 10am-2pm

The North Cascades Basecamp is offering three  nature-based art camps for ages 7-12. Nestled in an old growth cedar forest are plants, animals and trees that will help to inspire young artists as they explore and learn about the wonders that lay hidden in the forest. Sessions will be from 10:00AM to 2:00PM each day.

August 5-7 Habitat! Habitat!

Join us as we search for the homes of the elusive creatures that live in Mazama around the Basecamp’s unique habitat. With sketchbooks in hand, we’ll seek out burrows of the snowshoe hare, nests of birds, the beaver’s dam. Students will carefully observe where and how animals live in Mazama, sketch our observations, and select an animal to depict for a 3-D paper mache’ sculpture. We’ll study and create naturalists’ sketchbooks to understand how they record the natural world around us.

August 12-14 Native Flowers, Plants, Leaves and Trees

Become a botanical artist at the Basecamp this week, with hands-on work in a native plant restoration area, designed to boost bird and butterfly habitat, and restore native soil.  Students will have the hands-on opportunity to learn about Mazama’s native plants, and how to carefully move them to restore damaged areas. We will create signs for the area, decorate pots and signs with our own native plant to take home, create a mosaic from recycled glass, and block printing cards with drawings inspired from our findings.

August 19-21 In the Garden

It’s the beginning of harvest time at the Basecamp in August. Students will have a hands-on experience in the garden: we’ll pull gigantic garlic, collect plant seeds for next year’s garden, use the sun to separate honey from beeswax, create birdbaths and learn about pollinators.  We’ll create colorful banners and paint rocks inspired by the garden that can later be displayed outside the student’s own home or garden.

Instructors: Deirdre Cassidy, Kim Romain-Bondi & Raechel Youngberg

Cost: $90/session, includes art supplies
